BOSS™ Copperad Unit Heaters for Heat Pump and Low-Temperature Heating Systems

Specifying unit heaters for heat pump and low-temperature heating systems requires careful consideration of coil depth and fan performance. BOSS™ Copperad unit heaters are available with 2-row, 3-row, and 4-row coil options to suit conventional boilers, condensing systems, and heat pump installations, making them a practical choice as commercial buildings transition away from high-temperature fossil fuel heating.

Why standard unit heaters underperform on heat pump systems

Conventional unit heaters are typically rated at boiler flow temperatures of 70-82°C. At the lower flow temperatures produced by heat pumps (usually in the range of 45-55°C), a standard 2-row coil will deliver noticeably less heat output than its rated figure. In a warehouse or industrial space with a high heat loss, this can mean inadequate comfort conditions even when the system appears to be operating correctly.

The solution is not necessarily to oversize the unit. A deeper coil, specifically a 3-row or 4-row heat exchanger, increases the surface area available for heat transfer, allowing the unit to deliver meaningful output at low flow temperatures without requiring excessive flow rates or oversized units.

Coil options for every system type

BOSS™ Copperad unit heaters are available with three coil configurations.

Specifying the correct coil at design stage avoids the need for a unit replacement further down the line as systems are upgraded.

2 Row Coil

Suited to conventional boiler systems and medium-temperature hot water (MTHW) applications. Rated output is achieved at standard flow temperatures of 70-82°C.

3 Row Coil

Suited to condensing boiler systems and projects transitioning to lower operating temperatures. Provides improved output at reduced flow temperatures compared to the 2-row.

4 Row Coil

Designed specifically for heat pump and low-temperature hot water (LTHW) systems. Maximises heat transfer at flow temperatures in the 45-55°C range without requiring oversized units or high flow rates.

EC motors and BMS integration

All BOSS™ Copperad unit heaters use high-efficiency EC motor-driven fans as standard. EC motors offer significantly lower energy consumption than older AC fan technology and are compatible with 0-10V BMS control signals via the Copperad Delta controller. BACnet integration is also available through the Delta controller for larger building management systems.

Waterside output control is available, allowing the unit to modulate heat output in response to a room thermostat or BMS demand signal rather than simply switching on and off at full output.

Applications

BOSS™ Copperad unit heaters are used in warehouses, factories, distribution centres, and industrial spaces where high-output, directional heating is required. With outputs up to 50.9kW and adjustable louvres for precise air direction, they are suited to high-bay spaces where heating needs to reach the occupied zone without wasting energy on the full air volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which coil depth should I specify for a heat pump system?

For heat pump systems operating at 45-55°C flow temperature, specify the 4-row coil. The BOSS™ Technical Team can advise on selection for your specific flow temperature, return temperature, and room conditions.

Can Copperad unit heaters be integrated with a BMS?

Yes. The Copperad Delta controller supports 0-10V and BACnet integration for full BMS compatibility. Manual rocker switch controls are also available for simpler installations.

Are Copperad unit heaters available with BIM objects?

Yes. Active BIM objects are available for Copperad unit heaters, compatible with Revit.
